When Is the Best Time to Take Your Maternity Photos?
One of the questions I get asked most often is, “When should I book my maternity shoot?” It’s such an exciting season, and naturally, you want to capture it beautifully—while still feeling like you.
The sweet spot for maternity photos is usually between 28 to 34 weeks. Here’s why:
1. You’ve Got That Beautiful Bump!
By the third trimester, your bump is beautifully rounded and visible in photos, which makes for stunning silhouette and profile shots. It’s the perfect time to really showcase that pregnancy glow.
2. You’re Still Comfortable (Enough)
Around this time, most moms-to-be are still relatively comfortable moving around, walking, and even sitting or standing in different poses. Later in pregnancy, some of those movements become more challenging—and your energy might dip.
3. It Gives You Flexibility
Scheduling your session around 30 weeks gives you some wiggle room if baby decides to make an early appearance—or if weather or life calls for a reschedule. It also gives you time to receive your edited photos and enjoy them before baby arrives.
A Few Things to Consider:
Every pregnancy is different—if you're carrying multiples or have a high-risk pregnancy, you may want to schedule a bit earlier.
If you’re showing early, and your bump is nice and visible before 28 weeks, there’s no harm in doing it sooner.
Trust your body. If you’re already feeling tired or uncomfortable, communicate with your photographer to find a date that works best for you.
My Heart Behind Maternity Sessions
As a photographer (and a mom myself), I know how easy it is to feel less-than-photo-ready during pregnancy. But let me remind you: You are doing something amazing. You deserve to be celebrated, to feel beautiful, and to have these precious moments documented—not just for you, but for the little life you’re carrying.
You’ll never regret having these photos. You’ll only wish you had more.
